From Wendy - I asked friends to send me a little blurb about their favorite songs. Sue Sierens, a fellow Gainesville, Florida resident, sent me this great description of a song that's important to her:
TEACH YOUR CHILDREN, by Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young)
You who are on the road...
Whenever I hear these lyrics it brings to mind the 70s era (which is the one I love the best for so many reasons). Everyone was laid back and eager to help one another on their journey (whatever it was).
I guess I also love this song (and lyrics) because this was a time in my life that I was "on the road." I made a big move, over 1100 miles, away from family and friends to begin a new life for myself. I was 21 years old. The place I moved to was Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I literally packed up my bags and moved. No car, no place to live, no friends, no family. BUT I HAD A JOB! And in making this move, I found myslef (or at least started to become myself). I started to grow, to experience new and different things and started to embrace my new found life.
Everyone is resistent to change. But at the same time, I believe we thrive on change (some good - some bad). They are life's lessons. As Mahatma Gandhhi said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." I think living by example is the easiest and best way... Teach your children well... Teach your parents well....
In conclusion, this song makes me feel strong and makes me hopeful for more changes in the world by following a code that you (I) can live by.
My code: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Thank you, Sue, for being the first to submit to this Web site and for doing such a great job of opening up the dialogue!
