We just spent two hours watching a band called "The Imposters" reinterpret everyone from the Beatles to Bob Dylan to Jimi Hendrix. Wonderful concert. All the young kids, the neo-hippies, danced crazily in their tie-dyed shirts, their long hair whipping around in the warm night. But then at the end, the band did the song "Twist and Shout" and we old original hippies showed them what it was all about.
Now I'm down in a local bar listening to a girl with the most incredible voice singing "The Holy Ghost Building." The always talented Glenn Moody and Don Blitch played their cigar box guitars and now a bunch of young kids are playing amazing bluegrass. I think they're called Nook and Cranny. The band members are,Dana Myers, Scott Ashcraft, Mark Archer, Andrew Cook and Matt Lake. I don't know who does what, (besides the singer), but the musicians are fantastic. The fiddle player was stunning. But all the musicians went above and beyond - a dobro player, a bass player, guitarist, all of whom sing. The songs were mellow, solemn, old-fashioned, fun, upbeat. Quite a variety. Glenn calls them "Americana gothic honkeytonk!" That's a good description.
It's so unbelievable to me that I could spend an evening listening to so much talent. I'd love to hear Nook and Cranny play again.
So far we've spent a buck on a brownie and two on a beer and we've hd such a wonderful time. It's like being part of a secret society, the Gainesville crowd that comes out to play when the kids are gone. Every summer, we come out of hiding and meet old friends we haven't seen in years. And the music flows.
I have a week off and this year we're going to make it to the Florida Folk Festival next weekend. I can't wait. We're going to go camping, take a trip down the Ichnetucknee, get outdoors. Monday I go to the beach. But tonight, the music makes it magical. Nice way to start a vacation.
