I have to admit - I don't like country music. I'm a rock n roll fan from way back. Prior to rock, the music I listened to came from Broadway Musicals. I learned about classical music in elementary school and high school because I briefly played piano and flute. But those never took either. Nowadays, I tend to listen to progressive music, whatever that is, funny, weird, spooky songs that suck you in and make you think.
Still, I've been watching the new show, Nashville. It's fantastic. There's an older country music star, a snarky up-and-comer who's trying to take her place, and a young, talented singer who's too shy to do a good job. They're all fantastic characters, the acting is great and when they start singing, I find myself tapping my foot in spite of my best intentions.
Now, there's nothing wrong with country music, except that it seems sometimes like every man singing is a mysogynist woman-hater. I mean, come on, listen to the words in "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" and tell me that song doesn't turn a woman into an object.
But where did I hear that song? On a local weather station that plays nothing but country music. And sometimes, I'm embarrassed to find that I turn the music on to check the weather and find myself listening to the songs. And relating to them. Arghh. This can't be happening. I'm a progressive. I like new stuff. Yes, I'm the daughter of a southern man who can sing every verse of Dixie but can't remember what he had for breakfast. But I'm also the daughter of a northerner who introduced us to Lerner and Lowe, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sinatra and Enzo Caruzo, etc.
Yet, everytime I hear Zac Brown's "Knee Deep," I love it more. I have to admit, sometimes you just want a song to be fun.
Mind on a permanent vacation
The ocean is my only medication
Wishing my condition ain't ever gonna go away
Cause now I'm knee deep in the water somewhere
Got the blue sky breeze blowing wind through my hair
Only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair
Sunrise there's a fire in the sky
Never been so happy
Never felt so high
And I think I might have found me my own kind of paradise
